Welcome to Forest Data Bank.
The portal was officially launched in 2013, with pilot and implementation work lasting four years. By Order No. 36 of May 19, 2009, the Director General of the State Forests appointed a task force tasked with developing a concept for the construction and operation of a data bank on forest resources and the condition of forests under all ownership forms. This team analyzed and assessed existing data sets and the needs of potential users and formulated the "Concept for the Construction and Operation of a Data Bank on Forest Resources and the Condition of Forests," which contained the basic assumptions for the construction, organization, and operation of a data bank on forest resources and the condition of forests under all ownership forms—hereinafter referred to as the Forest Data Bank (FDB). This concept was presented and discussed during a seminar held at the Forest Research Institute on June 23, 2009, attended by representatives of the Ministry of the Environment, the State Forests, university forestry departments, the Forest Research Institute, the Bureau of Forest Management and Geodesy, the Central Statistical Office, as well as representatives of the timber industry and invited experts. The Forest Data Bank pilot project concluded in 2012, and one of its outcomes was the public release of a web portal presenting the results of the work in the form of cross-sectional summaries, an interactive map, and a WMS (World Map Service) service, which allows, among other things, the publication of spatial data from the BDL on any online mapping portal. This portal has gained popularity among institutions and companies using forest information in their operations, as well as among the public (interested individuals). The BDL pilot for forests outside the State Forests National Forest Holding covered three voivodeships: Masovian, Lesser Poland, and Subcarpathian. The next step was to expand the Forest Data Bank (BDL)—also commissioned by the Directorate General for State Forests—during which missing data (for forests outside the State Forests National Forest Holding) were acquired from the remaining 13 voivodeships, the applications in the calculation and reporting section of the bank were redesigned, and the website was modernized. This work lasted from 2013 to 2014. In December 2014, the Forest Data Bank resources were made publicly available in a new format. Since then, the BDL has been maintained and systematically expanded. New applications and services are being developed, new datasets are being made available, and information previously contained in the Forest Data Bank resources is being updated.
